George L. Smyth
Infrared and Pinhole Photography

George L Smyth has been involved in photography in one form or another most of his life, but not seriously until his trip to Wales in 1991. His specializations include infrared and pinhole photography, which allow greater freedom in achieving his vision. Use of alternative photographic processes widens his choices in the presentation of the image.

The infrared film most commonly used is Kodak HIE and HSI, the 35mm and 4X5 variants of the film. Use of a Wratten #25 filter is most common, although occasional use of a Hoya R72 filter helps to remove most vestages of the visible light spectrum. The 35mm film is processed in D76 and the 4X5 in Rodinal. He uses a plethora of pinhole cameras, ranging from a super wide angle 1.5" focal length 4X5 camera, to a coffee can, to a film cannister. His alternative processes include the Van Dyke process, Salt prints, and cyanotype. He is currently experimenting with the Albumen process.
